5th Annual Multimodality Cardiovascular and Thoracic Imaging 2019

Key West, FL US
November 4, 2019 to November 7, 2019

Course Directors:
Brian Shapiro, M.D.Patricia Mergo, M.D. and Carolyn Landolfo, M.D.

This course reviews the spectrum of advanced cardiovascular imaging including echocardiography, MRI, CT and nuclear cardiology for the practicing cardiologist or radiologist wishing to obtain state of the art knowledge on updated techniques and practices. In addition to interactive didactic sessions, attendees will have the opportunity to hone their skills with hands-on sessions and small-group workshops. A comprehensive didactic and hands-on, 4-day symposium will focus on point of care ultrasound (POCUS) and echocardiographic skills for advanced practice providers, critical care or emergency medicine providers and medical trainees.

There are two potential learning general session tracks available:
Track A features a four-day interactive and didactic forum for learning about various cardiovascular imaging modalities with breakout focus sessions. Each day will reflect a different theme such as structural heart disease, ischemic heart disease, heart failure and cardiomyopathies, as well as congenital heart disease. Lectures will be case-based and explore the relative science of each topic. Intermittently, multiple speakers will integrate their talks so the learner can be engaged from different viewpoints including cardiology, radiology and surgery. The forum incorporates innovative technologies to bring the learner to the procedures with taped, moderated broadcasts of TAVR, MitraClip, and Watchman procedures. Learn directly from the experts in a personal, interactive format that is geared to provide a fresh, innovative, and exciting forum for education.

Track B focuses on hands-on echocardiographic imaging for the physician, advanced practice provider, or trainee hoping to obtain a fundamental understanding of echocardiography and implement these principles at the bedside. Following a rapid didactic discussion, participants will have the opportunity to hone their skills in a small-group setting on volunteer patients and simulation equipment. Given the need to adhere to small-group, Track B is limited to 50 enrollments.

Target Audience

Track A is intended for practicing cardiologists, radiologists, and additional staff members who work directly with cardiac imaging.

Track B is directed towards non-cardiovascular physicians of various specialties (e.g. emergency medicine, critical care, hospitalists and primary care); as well as advanced practice providers interested in POCUS.

Learning Objectives

Upon conclusion of this program, participants should be able to:

  • Develop a fundamental grasp of basic and advanced echocardiography including hands-on demonstrations and individual scanning opportunities
  • Enhance echocardiography skills, particularly with 3D, strain, and hemodynamics
  • Advance knowledge base of cardiac magnetic resonance imaging and computed tomography and assimilate how these tools could be used in practice for structural and ischemic heart disease as well as heart failure and cardiomyopathies
  • Improve ability to select the appropriate noninvasive test including indications, image optimization, and appropriateness
  • Perfect interpretative skills in all aspects of multimodality imaging using didactics, interactive small group sessions, and one-on-one instruction

Guest Faculty:

As a remarkable addition to the conference this year, Dr. Matthias Friedrich and Dr. Martin Maron, two eminent cardiovascular imaging innovators, will be presenting keynote presentations.

As past president of the Society of Cardiovascular Magnetic Resonance and Chief of Cardiovascular Imaging at McGill University, Dr. Friedrich has pioneered a career in the assessment of inflammation and scar using CMR with a particular focus on myocarditis.  He has served as key author on several consensus statements and guideline recommendations in this area. He will address the use of parametric mapping as well as the role of CMR in the assessment of inflammation and scar in myocardial diseases.

Dr. Martin Maron, an Associate Professor of Medicine at Tufts University School of Medicine where he serves as the Director of the Hypertrophic Cardiomyopathy Clinic and Co-Director of Cardiac CT and MRI, is an internationally recognized investigator in the field of HCM research with a particular focus on scar burden and morphologic changes in this condition. Along with his astute clinical acumen, Dr. Maron has been instrumental in promoting HCM research and has created the algorithms by which we assess sudden cardiac death in HCM patients. He will provide state-of-the-art lectures in the assessment of HCM as well as methodologies to differentiate HCM from the athletic heart.
