Data Basics: Understanding and Illustrating Research Data
This module introduces various data types commonly seen in research studies. Proper identification of the data type is essential to summarize and analyze the data appropriately. Summary measures, including measures of central tendency ("averages") and variation (the "spread" of the data), are discussed for qualitative and quantitative data.
In addition, this module illustrates ways that data can be graphically displayed to uncover important attributes or limitations of the data. The target audience is students with minimal training in statistics who are new to working with data. Originally released July 1, 2012; renewed May 6, 2013; credit expires Dec. 31, 2017.

Rickey E. Carter, Ph.D., is the Section Head of Clinical Statistics in the Division of Biomedical Statistics and Informatics and he also assumes the role of Director of Biostatistics in the CCaTS. Dr. Carter came to Mayo from the Medical University of South Carolina (MUSC) where he was a tenure-track faculty member in the Department of Biostatistics, Bioinformatics and Epidemiology (DBBE). Dr. Carter received his B.S. in Mathematics from Winthrop University in 1997 and a Ph.D. in Biostatistics from MUSC in 2002. From 2000-2003, Dr. Carter was the Assistant Director and then Director, Information Systems, of the MUSC Clinical Innovation Group and was most recently the Associate Director of the MUSC Collaborative Unit in the Department of Biostatistics, Bioinformatics, and Epidemiology.
Dr. Carter has broad experience working with a wide spectrum of investigators (clinical and basic), and has a history of building strong relationships through these interactions.
