Dedicated Education Units (DEU) 2021 - Online CNE Course Series

July 14, 2021 to October 4, 2021

This online CNE course series is designed to provide organizations interested in implementing an innovative clinical nursing education model that builds student competence, socializes students to the role of the nurse and provides greater staff nurse satisfaction. The DEU model highlights an innovative academic practice partnership.

Session topics include overview of the DEU model, assessing readiness for change including stakeholder buy in, implementation strategies, and an overview of staff nurse education focused on working with student nurses.

This online CNE course series is blended learning with live facilitated sessions, enduring modules, and learner Q/A sessions with subject matter experts including academic nursing faculty.

Learning Objectives

Upon completion of this activity, participants should be able to:

  • Identify one change management strategy utilized for stakeholder buy in
  • Outline debriefing models and training for clinical nurse instructors and staff nurses
  • Develop an implementation plan for transition to a dedicated education unit
  • Create one method for evaluating implementation of a dedicated education unit

Featured Faculty 

Jane Foote, EdD, MSN, RN, CNE is the Program Director for the Midwest Nursing Academic Affairs at Mayo Clinic. She joined Mayo Clinic in 2018, after a 27 year career in Nursing education. She finds passion in her current role, focusing on expanding and learning deeply about the Dedicated Education Unit (DEU) as a model for transforming nursing education across the Mayo Clinic Midwest regions.  

Dr. Cyndy Jones is an Associate Professor of Nursing at Winona State University, as well as a Joint Appointment Faculty with Mayo Clinic, Midwest Nursing Academic Affairs. She is attributed with initiating the first ever dedicated education unit (DEU) clinical model at Mayo Clinic as part of her DNP program requirements. She has published multiple articles on the DEU model of clinical innovation. Jones has served as a DEU clinical faculty coordinator onsite at Mayo Clinic in the following settings: vascular surgery progressive care unit and radiology outpatient. Along with creating the role, Jones now serves as the DEU Coordinator at WSU, overseeing up to seven DEUs across multiple campuses and health care facilities.

Linnea Benike graduated from the University of Minnesota with her Doctor of Nursing Practice in Health Innovations and Leadership in 2012, and completed her BSN at the University of Minnesota. Linnea is a Clinical Assistant Professor at the University of Minnesota where she teaches and supports students in the BSN program. Linnea also holds a staff nurse role at Mayo Clinic, and is certified as a Progressive Care Certified Nurse. She has held various leadership roles in both ambulatory and inpatient care settings including roles in nursing quality and nurse management. She is passionate about quality improvement, patient safety, teamwork, and teaching innovations. Linnea is dedicated to exploring and utilizing best practices in undergraduate nursing education and has been involved in several initiatives to enhance teaching in both classroom and clinical settings.
