The Medical Breast Training Program will provide clinicians tools and knowledge to evaluate and manage common breast complaints, to perform personalized risk assessment and risk management and to care for breast cancer survivors. The goal is to educate practitioners in the field about guidelines for screening and diagnosis, risk reduction, genetics, and survivorship. 

Participants, through online, pre-recorded lectures and live interactive case discussion sessions, will gain practical knowledge about the workup and management of common breast issues, will confidently identify and manage those at risk and will effectively care for survivors, with topics ranging from bone health to sexuality to integrative medicine. 

Participants may self-pace their learning by starting and completing this course any time between April 1, 2022 and December 31, 2023.  This course may be purchased as a package or as individual sessions. To optimize opportunities and interaction with fellow course attendees, participation in the livestream discussion sessions is encouraged. Livestream sessions will be recorded and available to review or purchased as an individual session.

Target Audience

This program is designed for the specialty groups of for Medical Oncologists, Women's Health, Family Medicine, and Primary Care. Content is designed for physicians, NP, PA , RN and Allied Health professionals.

Learning Objectives

Utilization of this Mayo Clinic online (enduring materials) course does not indicate nor guarantee competence or proficiency in the performance of any procedures which may be in this course.

  • Review the clinical importance of average and high-risk screening, recognizing the challenges resulting in disparities.
  • Discuss the work up of common breast complaints including breast/axillary mass, breast pain, nipple discharge/scaling or erosion/inversion, skin changes, and changes in the shape of the breast or local deformities including mastery of the clinical breast exam.
  • Develop a consistent and comprehensive approach to identification of those at hereditary cancer with knowledge of NCCN guidelines, American Society of Breast Surgeons’ guidelines and those of USPSTF.
  • Discuss the management of patients with biopsy-proven high-risk breast lesions, a strong family history of breast cancer, or identified gene mutations that significantly increase risk of breast cancer.
  • Develop an approach to breast cancer risk mitigation strategies including lifestyle modifications, risk-reducing pharmacotherapy, or preventative surgery.
  • Demonstrate expertise in the identification and management of common benign breast lesions and more rare lesions such as phyllodes tumours and radial scars.
  • Describe the difference between non-invasive and invasive breast cancer and available surgical options for early-stage breast cancer including updates in breast reconstruction.
  • Describe healthcare needs for breast cancer survivors including surveillance imaging, management of SERM and AI side effects, bone health, and cardio-oncology surveillance and safe and effective treatments that may improve symptoms commonly seen with breast cancer survivors including vasomotor symptoms, sexual dysfunction, lymphedema, and mental health concerns.
  • Describe the role of healthy lifestyle habits including regular exercise, healthy diet, alcohol, and tobacco avoidance as it relates to breast cancer prevention and reduction in recurrence risk
  • Demonstrate the impact of hormones on breast cancer risk, be comfortable having informed discussions with women at risk for or with a history of breast cancer who wish to use hormones for local or systemic therapy.

The Medical Breast Training Program is available in two options: the full training program, or individual a la cart sessions. Learners who enroll in the full Medical Breast Training Program will receive a certificate of participation after all modules are completed. Learners must attend LIVESTREAM sessions in person to claim credit.

Learners will complete a quiz at the end of each session, a passing score of  80% is required to claim credit. Learners are allowed two attempts per quiz.   

All Canadian nurses who complete the program or ala carte sessions should note American Content in their portfolio.

Sandhya Pruthi, M.D.

Dr. Sandhya Pruthi is a consultant in the Division of General Internal Medicine, Department of Internal Medicine at Mayo Clinic in Rochester, Minnesota. Dr. Pruthi serves as an associate medical director for the Department of Development, and as medical director for the Division of Health Education and Content Services. She is the chief medical editor for the MayoClinic.org website. Dr. Pruthi’s research interests include chemoprevention of breast cancer using selective estrogen receptor modulators such as tamoxifen and raloxifene; aromatase inhibitors; alternative therapies in women who are at increased risk for breast cancer; and biomarkers that might be useful for assessing breast cancer risk.

Holly Pederson, MD

 Dr. Pederson is the Director of the Medical Breast Program at Cleveland Clinic and Associate Professor of Medicine at CCLCM.

She completed a clinical genetics fellowship at CCF in 2008 and the City of Hope Course in 2017.  She is actively involved in clinical research and is co-appointed in the Lerner Research Institute.

She has served on the NCCN Risk Reduction and Genetic Committees and speaks nationally with a focus on management of high-risk patients.  She has developed an internal fellowship for training of Medical Breast Providers, a program which she helped to create. 

Ruth Heisey, M.D., CCFP, FCFP

Dr. Ruth Heisey is Chief of the Department of Family and Community Medicine and Medical Director of the Peter Gilgan Centre for Women’s Cancers at Women’s College Hospital, Toronto, Canada. She is a Clinician Investigator and an Associate Professor at the University of Toronto. As well as being a family physician she is a GP Oncologist with clinical expertise in breast cancer diagnosis and management of women at increased risk. Her areas of research interest include exploring strategies that identify women at risk and interventions to mitigate this risk as well as exploring ways to improve the lives of women living with cancer.

Juliana (Jewel) Kling, MD MPH NCMP FACP

 Dr. Jewel Kling is an Associate Professor of Medicine, Chair of the Division of Women’s Health Internal Medicine, Assistant Director of the Women's Health Center and Associate Chair of Equity, Inclusion and Diversity for the Department of Medicine at the Mayo Clinic in Scottsdale, Arizona.

She completed medical school and a master’s in public health at the University of Arizona Tucson and Internal Medicine Residency at Mayo Clinic Arizona, followed by a Chief Internal Medicine fellowship year.

Her clinical and research interest are in menopause, sexual health, breast health and LGBT care. She is a North American Menopause Society (NAMS) Certified Menopause Practitioner and serves on the board of the International Society for the Study of Women’s Sexual Health (ISSWSH), and the American Medical Women’s Association Sex and Gender Health Collaborative. She is part of the transgender steering committee at MCA and has been a past co-chair of the LGBTI Mayo Employee Resource Group. She is also involved in education and is active with the Internal Medicine residency and Mayo Clinic Alix School of Medicine, as well as efforts to expand the discipline of Sex and Gender specific medicine.

Dawn M. Mussallem, D.O.

Dr. Mussallem, DO, DipABLM is board-certified in family medicine and is a diplomate of the American Board of Lifestyle Medicine. She is a diagnostic breast specialist at The Robert and Monica Jacoby Center for Breast Health at Mayo Clinic Jacksonville, Florida. In 2015, she founded the Integrative Breast Health Program at Mayo Clinic Florida. Dr. Mussallem’s expertise and research focuses on lifestyle medicine, evidence-based breast cancer nutrition, integrative oncology, cancer survivorship, and breast cancer risk assessment. She was named 2021’s Marquis Who’s Who Top Doctor for her leadership, dedication, and achievements in integrative oncology. Dr. Mussallem is Chief Executive Editor for the National Consortium of Breast Centers and Breast Wellness Magazine. She chairs the Humanities in Medicine Clinical committee and is on the Mayo Clinic Experience committee.

Melinda Wu, M.D.

Dr. Melinda Wu is a Family Physician and Breast Physician/General Practitioner in Oncology at Women's College Hospital and Princess Margaret Cancer Centre in Toronto, Canada. She is the Clinical Education Lead for the Peter Gilgan Centre for Women's Cancers at Women's College Hospital. Dr. Wu is an Assistant Professor in the Department of Family & Community Medicine at the University of Toronto. In addition to her clinical work, Dr. Wu is actively engaged in medical education and currently serves as the Program Co-Director for the Post-Graduate training program in Family Medicine at Women's College Hospital. 

Heidi A. Apsey, APRN, NP-C, M.S.N.

Heidi Apsey, APRN, NP-C, M.S.N is Assistant Professor of Surgery Mayo Clinic College of Medicine in Phoenix, Arizona. She has been involved in numerous committees and education activities focusing on improving patient outcomes and has received awards for her work in this area including Distinguished Clinical Care Team Award and Mayo Award for Excellence through Teamwork.  She has previously operated as surgical first assist with Surgical Oncology and actively participates in breast cancer clinical trials. Heidi currently practices in the Breast Clinic providing care and consultation for patients with benign breast disease, breast cancer, high risk screening/surveillance and surgical patients.
