Pharmacy Grand Rounds 11/30/2015: Antibacterial Prophylaxis in High-Risk Febrile Neutropenia
Activity Overview
This presentation will discuss the use of antibiotics as a preventative measure against febrile neutropenia in high-risk patients, such as those with acute leukemia receiving intensive induction-remission chemotherapy. Additionally, this presentation will briefly describe recommendations of current guidelines and incorporate newer literature involving alternate agents that can be utilized for antibacterial prophylaxis. Lastly, consequences of employing such a strategy will be discussed with a focus on future research needs.
Target Audience
This continuing education (CE) activity was planned to meet the needs of pharmacists and other clinicians who routinely prescribe and/or monitor medications.
Learning Objectives
At the conclusion of this knowledge-based CE activity, participants should be able to:
- Identify patients who are at high risk for febrile neutropenia
- Recognize and provide alternative recommendations for antibacterial prophylaxis in high-risk patients where fluoroquinolones may not be suitable
- Discuss resistance issues and breakthrough infections that may occur when utilizing an antibacterial agent as infection prophylaxis during febrile neutropenia

Dr. Jason Barreto is a hematology/oncology clinical pharmacist at Mayo Clinic Hospital - Rochester practicing for almost 10 years since completing an Infectious Diseases residency at Mayo Clinic. He is a Board Certified Pharmacotherapy Specialist with added qualifications in Infectious Diseases, an Assistant Professor of Pharmacy at the Mayo Clinic College of Medicine, and an accomplished clinician, educator, and researcher in the areas of antimicrobial therapeutic drug monitoring and infections in the immunocompromised host.
