Pharmacy Grand Rounds 8/03/2015: Do you have the GUTS? Medication absorption after gastrointestinal resection
Activity Overview
This presentation will provide a summary of evidence to describe changes in gastrointestinal (GI) absorption of orally administered medications in patients who have undergone various types of GI resection. It will also review strategies to overcome these changes and modify dosing recommendations.
Target Audience
This continuing education (CE) activity was planned to meet the needs of pharmacists and other clinicians who routinely prescribe and/or monitor medications.
Learning Objectives
At the conclusion of this knowledge-based CE activity, participants should be able to:
- Describe intestinal physiology and pertinent mechanisms of drug absorption
- Describe various types of gastrointestinal (GI) resections that are likely to influence drug absorption
- Explain the absorptive changes that are expected in the setting of GI resection
- Outline recommendations for drug therapy modification for a patient post GI resection

She completed PGY1 & PGY2 residency training in Internal Medicine at the Virginia Commonwealth University Health System in Richmond, VA. Dr. Langworthy’s practice interests within internal medicine include gastroenterology, nephrology, and infectious diseases.
