Pharmacy Grand Rounds 8/31/2015: The Aftermath of the Decade of Pain: Alternatives to Opioids in Chronic Pain Management
Activity Overview
This presentation will review the evidence for non-opioid medication options for the management of chronic pain. Opioid tapering strategies with pertinent individual patient factors to consider for opioid tapering will be discussed.
Target Audience
This continuing education (CE) activity was planned to meet the needs of pharmacists and other clinicians who routinely prescribe and/or monitor medications.
Learning Objectives
At the conclusion of this knowledge-based CE activity, participants should be able to:
Provide an overview of the impact of increased opioid prescribing in chronic pain
Review adjuvant medications used in chronic pain
Describe relevant pharmacokinetic information, concurrent medications and disease states that impact the tapering of opioids

Dr. Cunningham obtained a BS degree from the University of Iowa and a Doctor of Pharmacy degree from Creighton University. She currently is a clinical pharmacist in the outpatient Pain Rehabilitation Program and the Director of Pharmacy Clinical Practice at Mayo Clinic Hospital – Rochester.
