Principles of Pain Management and Palliative Care: Essential Tools for the Clinician 2018

This multidisciplinary course provides primary and subspecialty clinicians with a solid foundation to apply pain and symptom management skills across a continuum of disease states from relative health through serious illness and end-of-life.

This course targets the integration of pain and palliative services across disciplines and includes topics related to the management of complex chronic pain, cancer pain, mood co-morbidities, addiction and other end-of-life symptomatology. 

A didactic format will include the use of an interactive keypad system, case-based presentations and question and answer panel discussions. Pre-course workshops are available for more intensive, interactive learning opportunities.

Target Audience

This course is targeted towards non-pain & non-palliative specialists of all backgrounds, including general internal medicine, emergency medicine, neurology, family medicine, physiatrists, psychiatrists, hospitalists, advanced-practitioners, physician assistants, pharmacists, and other medical providers (both physician and non-physician).  

Learning Objectives

Upon completion of this activity, participants should be able to: 

  • Identify appropriate patients for chronic opioid therapy versus patients who should be tapered to lower doses, or discontinued.  
  • Predict patient related risk factors for opioid related morbidity and mortality.  
  • Manage the symptoms of severe medical illness, while employing strategies to minimize side-effects and maximize quality of life measures for patients.
