The Mayo Clinic International Symposium on Surgery of the Spastic Upper Limb is a comprehensive course designed for physiotherapists, rehabilitation specialists, and surgeons who treat adult and pediatric patients with a spastic upper limb. The course revolves around a multidisciplinary approach to the procedural and surgical management of the spastic upper extremity utilizing didactic lectures reviewing current concepts, stimulating debates on controversial surgical techniques, all-access live surgery demonstrations with a master surgeon, and engaging case presentations. A precourse is offered on June 4, 2024 to provide a thorough review of advanced surgical anatomy and hands-on dissection to learn and refine surgical techniques for the spastic upper extremity. This United States based offering is a continuation from the International Symposium on Surgery of the Spastic Upper Limb held in Paris, France in 2017 under the direction of Dr. Caroline Leclercq.

Mayo Clinic’s Hospital Medicine Boot Camp for NPPAs is a two-day course designed for the novice learner, ideally within the first year of their hospital-based NPPA position. This course is meant to be fun and full of practical information taught by faculty that use current guidelines and share tidbits of experience to help successfully care for acutely ill hospitalized patients. It is filled with a variety of commonly encountered hospital scenarios followed by interactive and informal discussion. Open dialog is encouraged. Participants should feel free to wear scrubs and comfortable shoes, bring a stethoscope, and reference/clinical materials used in daily practice. Despite being called boot camp there are no physical fitness elements to the course.

Social Work 2024 Symposium - Somatic Play Therapy Through the Lifespan This conference will provide a theoretical framework and strategies for use of somatic play therapy, along with other evidence-based practices to address medical trauma. Play therapy with adults looks radically different than with children but is a useful intervention for both patient populations. Somatic and play-based modalities allow for processing and healing of body memories that may have a linguistic story. Use of sounds, smells, and vestibular triggers will be reviewed. The course will begin with a discussion of echocardiographic assessment of left and right ventricular function, including presentations on diastolic function and strain imaging for assessing myocardial function.
