The annual gathering showcases research and best practice surrounding the intersection of arts and humanities disciplines with a connection to healthcare – inclusive of music, visual art, theatre, dance, creative writing, storytelling, narrative practice, ethical considerations, and other topical discussions.

Target Audience

The symposium is designed to engage artists, humanists, and healthcare providers who have an interest in this fast-growing field. We welcome attendees from a broad spectrum of arts in healthcare and health humanities proponents including – arts and health practitioners, expressive art therapists, physicians, nurses, allied health professionals, veterans services professionals, social workers, chaplains, healthcare administrators, artists, researchers, educators, students, family and professional caregivers.

Learning Objectives

  • Identify ways in which health humanities and the arts can provide valuable teaching tools for health care professionals, specifically in terms of improving patient communications, empathy, and resilience.
  • Describe how other practitioners have enhanced their practice through their work in Health Humanities.
  • Explain how the active experience of the arts (literature, visual art, music, theatre, dance and others) can improve health care delivery and the work/life experience of health care practitioners.
  • Discuss ways the arts and health humanities can support community health.
