This three-day course covers current and emerging spine topics driving national change in the quality and delivery of care. Participants from all training backgrounds will learn new skills to survive in the spine care environment of the near future. A unique split curriculum for both nonoperative and procedural specialists delivers Mayo-quality updates via didactics, case presentations, a hands-on examination skills lab, a US-guided injection skill lab and surgical skill labs. Overall, the course provides a rewarding clinical experience for all spine care practitioners, including spine surgeons, medical specialists, primary care providers and family medicine providers, as well as physical therapists, clinical nurse practitioners and physician assistants.

The registration fee includes tuition, a comprehensive course syllabus, continental breakfasts, lunch and break refreshments. When registering, you will be asked to choose a track for the afternoon sessions.

Surgical track — This track has content specific to the procedural specialists. 
Medical track — This track has content specific to the nonoperative attendees.

You must preselect the track you will attend during the afternoon sessions on Friday and Saturday.

Learning Objectives
Upon conclusion of this program, participants should be able to:

  • Perform a complete musculoskeletal and neurological examination of a patient who presents with low back pain with or without leg symptoms
  • Perform a complete musculoskeletal and neurological examination of a patient who presents with neck pain with or without arm symptoms
  • Describe an evidence-based approach to acute low back pain, including initial pharmacologic and nonpharmacologic treatment, and follow-up treatment when symptoms persist
  • Describe an evidence-based approach to lumbar radiculopathy, including pharmacologic, nonpharmacologic and surgical treatment options
  • Respond to complications of spine surgery
  • Recognize the importance of osteoporosis care and impact on surgical and nonsurgical patient outcomes
  • Respond to complications of spine trauma and tumor surgery
  • Demonstrate and facilitate the surgical treatment and management on native and implant associated spine infections.
  • Describe and organize the surgical treatment and management of primary and metastatic oncologic spine disease
  • Assess and prioritize the operative and non-operative treatment of spine trauma
  • Review, describe and minimize common and rare complications associated with spine surgery
  • Describe and apply techniques of fusion and nonfusion for degenerative spine conditions

Mayo Clinic College of Medicine is accredited by the Accreditation Council for Continuing Medical Education to provide continuing medical education for physicians.
