This pre-course is an intensive 3 hour workshop with focus on wound assessment, wound care products, and commonly encountered wound care procedures for the hospitalized patient that integrates both didactic and simulation based learning into an experiential learning curriculum that emphasizes knowledge and practice behavior.  It arms the participant with the knowledge and skills to complete commonly occurring wound cares.

Target Audience

Targeted audience includes hospital based Nurse Practitioners and Physician Assistants was well as physician hospitalists.  

Learning Objectives

Upon conclusion of this program, participants should be able to:

  • Describe basic physiology of wound healing.
  • Discuss basic wound assessment skills.
  • List multiple wound care products with their indications and contraindications
  • Discuss 5 types of wounds that require referral to a wound specialist or surgical specialty.
  • Demonstrate application and removal of wound vacuum assisted closure.
  • Demonstrate sharp debridement on simulated wound.

The Hilton Rochester Mayo Clinic Area is a new hotel opening in 2019. Reservations will be accepted sometime after the New Year by calling the Hilton Rochester directly at 507-258-5757 and identifying yourself as attending the Mayo Clinic NPPA course.

Travel

Rochester, Minnesota, is a friendly city that greets thousands of visitors from around the world each year.  The city is serviced by a modern international airport with multiple flights daily via American.  Access to and from the airport is provided by taxi, shuttle service, and rental car.  The airport is located approximately 10 miles from the Mayo Clinic campus. 

Note to Travelers: Several cities in the United States are named Rochester.  When you make airline reservations and check your baggage, be sure that your destination is Rochester, Minnesota (RST) and that your baggage has been properly tagged.

Flying through the Minneapolis/St. Paul International Airport (MSP) is another option.  (www.mspairport.com)  There are two shuttle services that provide direct service to Mayo Clinic and the surrounding area.  Travel time is approximately 75 minutes.
