Course Directors: Halena M. Gazelka, M.D.Benjamin Lai, M.B., B.Ch., B.A.O. and Julie L. Cunningham, Pharm.D., R.Ph.

Buprenorphine is one of the main medications used in the treatment of opioid use disorder with good evidence of reducing relapses and overdose when used in combination with counseling.  This interactive workshop focuses on key components to ensure the success in selecting the most appropriate patients for office-based buprenorphine treatment, essentials in buprenorphine induction and subsequent monitoring, regulatory requirements, and defining the roles of allied health staff in the care of patients on buprenorphine.

Target Audience

This topic is important and has become a more visible public health issue. All fields within medicine that provide direct patient care are impacted, including medical, surgical and outpatient settings. All providers who prescribe (MD, DO, NP, PA, CNS) or administer (nurse, pharmacist, etc.) opioids to patients would benefit from attending this course. This course is particularly relevant for primary care providers that maintain and monitor patients on chronic opioid therapy.

Learning Objectives

Upon completion of this activity, participants should be able to:

  • Review opioid practice updates and discuss how to implement a plan to appropriately monitor patients who chronically use opioids.
  • Define methods to taper opioids using a team-based approach and the options for proper opioid disposal.
  • Describe the use of methadone and buprenorphine in the management of chronic pain.
  • Determine and optimize treatment for patients suffering from pain and comorbid depression/anxiety.
  • Identify those with opioid use disorder and understand medication assisted therapy.
  • Apply best practice for non-opioid adjuvants, interventional pain therapies, and alternative pain modalities as part of a comprehensive multimodal pain management plan.
