Specialists in Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation (PM&R) help restore movement and function to people disabled by disease or injury. PM&R physicians (called physiatrists — pronounced fiz-e-AT-rists) create therapy plans that consider the unique needs, abilities and objectives of each patient. Physiatrists work closely with a team of physical therapists, occupational therapists and other rehabilitation professionals to develop a treatment plan tailored to each patients needs.  The PM&R team may offer treatment options that include physical modalities such as heat or ice, acupuncture and therapeutic exercise to improve function.
