The "1st Annual Mayo Clinic Sports Medicine Summit:  Care for the Athlete” offered in Phoenix, Arizona, is designed to discuss current topics in sports medicine and will feature evidence-based and cutting-edge diagnostic and treatment strategies for sports-related and musculoskeletal conditions.  Sessions feature knee, hip, concussion management, medical issues in sports, upper extremity, and biologics in sports medicine. Hot topics including platelet-rich plasma, stem cells, cartilage restoration, various therapy protocols and current concussion protocols will be discussed.

Our diverse Mayo Clinic and guest faculty include leaders in various fields of sports medicine including orthopedics, physical medicine and rehabilitation, radiology, neurology and physical therapy.  Multiple educational formats will be utilized including case presentations, interactive Q & A sessions, didactic presentations, and live ultrasound demonstrations.

Upon conclusion of this program, participants should be able to:

  • Discuss the most recent strategies for recognition, diagnosis, and treatment of proximal hamstring tendon tears.

  • Assess when to consider the use of orthopedic biologics such as PRP and stem cells.

  • Evaluate and begin treatment for hip impingement and instability as well as available surgical techniques if needed.

  • Summarize the treatment of PCL injuries of the knee and when to consider operative and non-operative intervention.

  • State indications and treatment for meniscal injuries.

  • Review the anatomy, pathophysiology, diagnosis, and treatment of shoulder instability in the athletic population and when to recommend surgery.
