Esophageal disease is a rapidly developing medical area marked by significant advances in diagnosis, therapy and identification of new diseases. This CME course will take a comprehensive approach to explore these exciting advancements, including high-resolution manometry and impedance monitoring; new techniques in endoscopic detection and treatment of Barrett’s esophagus; and insights into new diseases such as eosinophilic esophagitis.

A concurrent session designed especially for advanced practice providers and allied health professionals will be offered Saturday, December 4, 2021. (Live & Livestream)

Workshop (Live Only) - Saturday Morning Session

A special feature of this program is a hands-on workshop for interpretation and performance of motility studies, new endoscopic imaging techniques, endoscopic mucosal resection and ablation. Participants will rotate through the following stations:

Hands-On Workshop Stations

  • Endoscopic Mucosal Resection
  • Radiofrequency Ablation
  • Cryotherapy
  • Techniques of Clip (TTS, OTS) and Stent Placement
  • Advanced Imaging in Barrett’s Esophagus and Esophageal Disease

Esophageal Laboratory Testing

  • Reading Ambulatory Reflux Monitoring Tests
  • Reading Basic Esophageal Manometry
  • Reading Advanced Esophageal Manometry

LIVE (in-person) attendees must comply with all live course requirements and guidelines and applicable state and local COVID-19 travel restrictions, guidance and resources.  

Please note that all live course attendees must: 

  • Provide proof of vaccination prior to event admission. You must be logged in to ce.mayo.edu to provide proof of vaccination.  

  • Complete COVID-19 testing and provide attestation that a negative test result was received within 72 hours or less of the event start date  or provide attestation that you received a lab-confirmed positive COVID-19 test result within the previous 90 days, that it has been at least 10 days since the positive test result, and that you are currently asymptomatic. You must be logged in to ce.mayo.edu to complete your attestation. This form will be available to submit on November 30, 2021 at 7:00 a.m., MST.

Target Audience

This course is designed for practicing gastroenterologists, fellows and residents in gastroenterology. Thoracic surgeons, otolaryngologists and pulmonologists, as well as other healthcare professionals with an interest in esophageal diseases may benefit from this program.

Learning Objectives

Upon completion of this activity, participants should be able to:

  • Reduce unnecessary repeated procedures and rescheduling of procedures.
  • Demonstrate a structured approach for the evaluation of patients with dysphagia including eosinophilic esophagitis.
  • Identify current medical and surgical management options for esophageal outlet obstruction including achalasia and diffuse esophageal spasm.
  • Summarize the appropriate use of tools to diagnose and assess treatment response in gastro-esophageal reflux disease and hiatal hernia.
  • Identify patients with Barrett's esophagus who are acceptable candidates for endoscopic eradication therapy including endoscopic mucosal resection and radiofrequency ablation.
  • Examine the potential role of cannabis and opioid medications as causes of upper gut symptoms including altered esophageal motility.
  • Describe the clinical and endoscopic management of patients with benign refractory esophageal strictures.
