The course is designed to synthesize disciplines to discuss controversial topics in the multidisciplinary management of IBD with the goal of improving patient care.  The course highlights the latest clinical trial research in Crohn’s disease and ulcerative colitis to expose timely and relevant medical and surgical approaches.  Emerging surgical approaches are emphasized to underscore the need of improving surgical management and postoperative outcomes.

  • Emerging stem cell based therapeutics for the treatment of fistulizing Crohn’s disease
  • Optimizing stages for ileal pouch anal anastomosis in the era of biologic therapy
  • Understanding the latest clinical trial research in early surgery versus initiation of biologic therapy for terminal ileal Crohn’s disease

Target Audience

This course is designed for Colorectal surgeons, gastroenterologists, nurse practitioners, physician assistants, radiologists, and stoma therapists (all providers caring for patients with inflammatory bowel disease).

Learning Objectives

Upon conclusion of this program, participants should be able to:

  • Recognize the optimal timing of operative intervention for ulcerative colitis and Crohn’s disease
  • Formulate an optimal multidisciplinary treatment plan for patients with inflammatory bowel disease
  • Evaluate the effect of biologics on postoperative outcomes
  • Determine the optimal approach to staging an ileal pouch anal anastomosis in the setting of immunosuppression and malnutrition
  • Interpret the latest data regarding screening practices for colonic dysplasia and deciding when to operate
