This two-and-one-half-days Mayo Clinic course is designed to update participants on a range of surgical approaches in the treatment of spinal disorders. The course will introduce anatomic approaches to the cervical, thoracic and lumbar spine as well as surgical indications, principles, techniques, and skills. Panel discussions, lectures and case presentations will provide the background for extensive hands-on cadaver sessions where participants will have the opportunity to practice these techniques with expert faculty. In addition to cadaveric models, attendees will be able to utilize Mayo Clinic's innovative biomimetic 3D printed spinal axis simulators for additional practice of techniques learned during the didactic and hands-on course sessions.

Target Audience

This course is designed for neurosurgery and orthopedic surgery medical providers at various stages of their careers including residents, fellows, attendings, nurse practitioners and physician assistants.

Learning Objectives

Upon conclusion of this program, participants should be able to:

  • Recognize the posterior bony element anatomy of the cervical, thoracic, and lumbosacropelvic spine as it relates to pedicle screw placement
  • Demonstrate the surgical technique of freehand thoracic, lumbar, and sacropelvic instrumentation
  • Comprehend the principles of occipital, atlantoaxial, and sub-axial cervical fixation techniques
  • Describe the presentation, diagnosis, and surgical management of spinal dural arteriovenous fistulas
  • Describe the basic principles of spinal cord mapping during intramedullary tumor resection 
  • Review the basic principles of CT-guided navigation for posterior spine instrumentation
  • Demonstrate the approaches to oblique, anterior, and lateral interbody techniques
  • Recognize the vital anatomical structures during lateral and anterolateral interbody techniques

Wayne and Delores Barr Weaver Simulation Center at Mayo Clinic's Florida campus is located in the Stabile North Building on the 8th floor. Parking is available in multiple lots near the Stabile North Building on W.M.
