ForwardNailfold Capillaroscopy Workshop 2018
Course Directors: Andy Abril, M.D. and Florentina Berianu, M.D.
Learners will be instructed on the normal and abnormal morphology of the microcirculation. Learners will be informed about the most important risk factors that may induce the endothelial damage that starts in Raynaud's phenomenon. The most common capillaroscopic patterns will be explained as well as the different tools available for analysis. The predictive and prognostic role of capillaroscopy in scleroderma will be explained and documented. Links with other techniques investigating the skin thickness and the peripheral blood flow in scleroderma patients will be shown. Finally, the effects of specific combination treatments of systemic sclerosis on the capillaroscopic analysis of the microcirculation will be reported. By the end of the session, participants will be able to grasp when a capillaroscopic pattern is pathologic and what to do. Learners will observe on live patients how to perform nailfold capillaroscopic analysis, and will discuss the diagnosis and management with their tutors.
