Genomic testing and genomic medicine are both rapidly growing fields, and the American Nurses Association recognizes that all nurses have a role in delivering genetics/genomics services to patients and families. Clinical advances have resulted in the introduction of genomics into practices ranging from primary care to oncology to critical care. These courses are designed to provide nurses and health care staff with broad education in genomics and were specifically developed to translate genomic science into practice.

Testosterone has a variety of health benefits. It helps maintain bone density, muscle mass, red blood cell production and sexual function. Testosterone levels in men tend to peak between age 30 to 40 then gradually decline and it’s not unusual to find low testosterone levels in men over the age of 50. It’s also known that in men with hypogonadism, testosterone supplementation can improve libido, bone density and muscle mass. Should we be checking testosterone levels in our middle-age male patients? How do we determine who should receive testosterone supplementation and finally what are the risks of supplementation? This course will review medical conditions encountered while performing CMV examinations, utilizing a case-based interactive approach focused on efficiently addressing complex clinical issues. The training includes the following core competencies: 1)The role of the examiner in enhancing public safety; 2) Diagnostic approaches in assessing medical fitness of the commercial driver; 3) Navigating clinical and administrative issues commonly encountered in driver medical certification; 4) Understanding and effectively managing the complexity of the physical requirements and stresses involved in operating commercial vehicles; 5) Strategies for prevention and health promotion for CMV drivers. Content will focus on the core curriculum required by the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration (FMCSA). Following completion of this training, participants will receive the certification required to take the NRCME examination.

It’s estimated that between 2% and 3% of the population has some form of valvular heart disease and this increases with age. Most of these patients are initially cared for by primary care providers. Most valvular disease deaths are due to disease of the aortic valve and it’s important to recognize these patients early in order to assess for progression and the need for surgical intervention. What are the presenting symptoms of aortic valve disease? What’s the best way to manage and follow these patients and when should a cardiologist and cardiac surgeon become involved in the care of the patient? In this podcast, we’ll discuss these questions and more with cardiologist Rekha Mankad, M.D., from the Mayo Clinic.
