The heart-brain connection has been recognized since ancient times. The evolution of medicine and science has contributed to a better characterization of this connection which more recently has been consolidated in the field of Psychocardiology. This subspecialty encompasses research and clinical practice within Consultation-Liaison Psychiatry. This presentation will review the trajectory of the field of Psychocardiology by providing the historical background, the available evidence on psychological distress and psychiatric syndromes that commonly affect patients with cardiovascular disease, as well as the diagnostic and treatment strategies that have been identified for this population of patients. Moreover, this presentation will help identify the existing knowledge gaps and the future directions necessary to advance the field of Psychocardiology.
