TITLE:  Normative Psychology:  A Professional Obligation?

Introduction:
John Lucas is a Consultant and Vice Chair of Department of Psychiatry & Psychology at Mayo Clinic Florida. He earned his doctoral degree from the University of Texas at Austin and completed is postdoctoral training at the University of California San Diego. He has served as an investigator in the Clinical Core of the Mayo Clinic Alzheimer’s Disease Research Center since 1993 and has Directed the Center’s Outreach, Recruitment, and Engagement Core since 2012(ish). Dr. Lucas worked closely with Dr. Ivnik on Mayo’s OIder African Americans Normative Studies and will be speaking today about use and misuse of demographic normative corrections in clinical practice.

Learning Objectives
Upon conclusion of this activity, participants should be able to:

  • Summarize the psychometric rational for applying demographically corrected norms to cognitive test scores in ethnic minority patients.
  • Recognize circumstances under which it is inappropriate to apply demographically corrected norms to cognitive test scores in ethnic minority patients.
