TITLE: Psychiatric Care at the World Scout Jamboree: Lessons for Us All
PRESENTER: Steven Altchuler, M.D., Ph.D.
INTRODUCTION:
Dr. Altchuler is a Consultant in the Department of Psychiatry and Psychology. Following undergraduate and graduate studies at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, he joined the staff of the NASA Johnson Space Center, where he was an aerospace physiologist. After several years there, he returned to medical school and received his MD at the Baylor College of Medicine in Houston, Texas, and then did residency training at the Mayo Clinic. He has been on the staff of the Mayo Clinic since 1990.
Dr. Altchuler has a history of exploring limits. He has been active in Scouting since the 1960’s. He has been to three of the four Boy Scouts of America high adventure bases, including camping in the Boundary Waters in the middle of January in below-zero conditions. He has 70 minutes of weightlessness to his name. He is a dive master. He is a private pilot. He has served on the staff of three Boy Scouts of America National Jamborees, as well as volunteering for the World Organization of the Scout Movement to serve as a physician on one international Jamboree. He has been recognized for his service with the Silver Beaver award. He is one of only seven people from southeast Minnesota to receive the Silver Antelope Award, for service to youth on a regional basis. He has received the highest level of achievement that adult Scouters anywhere in the world can earn - his Woodbadge beads. (For those who know, he used to be a Bobwhite.)
Perhaps most relevant, he is very proud of the positive difference he made in many youths’ lives this summer.
LEARNING OBJECTIVES:
