TITLE: Psychiatrists, Public Speech, and Politics
PRESENTER: Rebecca W. Brendel, M.D.
INTRODUCTION:
Rebecca Weintraub Brendel is the director of the Master’s Degree Program and Associate Director of the Harvard Medical School Center for Bioethics. She bases her clinical work in psychiatry at Massachusetts General Hospital (MGH) where she is the director of Law and Ethics at the Center for Law, Brain, and Behavior, provides medical oversight for the hospital’s inpatient guardianship team, and practices clinical and forensic psychiatry. Dr. Brendel graduated from both University of Chicago Law School and Pritzker School of Medicine. She completed her psychiatry residency at MGH and McLean Hospitals, a forensic psychiatry fellowship at MGH, and an ethics faculty fellowship at the Edmond J. Safra Center for Ethics at Harvard. She is also admitted to the Massachusetts Bar.
Dr. Brendel has spent her career at the interface of psychiatry, medicine, law, and ethics, and has served on multiple clinical and organizational ethics committees. At present, she is Vice Chair of the Massachusetts Medical Society Ethics Committee, Chair of the American Psychiatric Association Ethics Committee, and serving her first of seven years as a member of the American Medical Association Council on Ethical and Judicial Affairs, appointed by AMA President Patrice Harris MD. She is immediate past president of the Academy of Consultation-Liaison Psychiatry. Dr. Brendel is an assistant professor of psychiatry at Harvard Medical School.

- Demonstrate knowledge of the core ethical concepts relevant to psychiatrist participation in the media.
- Recognize strategies for ethical psychiatrist participation in public life.
