DESCRIPTION
The Cardiothoracic Surgery Morbidity and Mortality (M&M) Conference is a structured, peer-reviewed educational forum dedicated to the critical analysis of adverse outcomes, complications, and near-miss events in cardiothoracic surgical care. The conference promotes a culture of transparency, accountability, and continuous improvement through systematic case review and multidisciplinary discussion.

In-Person and Live-Streamed; Quarterly

TARGET AUDIENCE
Physicians

LEARNING OBJECTIVES
Upon completion of this activity, participants should be able to:

  • Identify practice gaps revealed by M&M case review and translate current evidence and consensus guidance into actionable plans to standardize care and improve outcomes.
  • Apply ERAS/ERATS elements to CT-surgery cases by correctly selecting and sequencing key components (pre-op optimization, anesthesia/analgesia updates, early mobilization, nutrition, standardized discharge) to identify local barriers and adherence with a feasible fix.
  • Assess transplant innovations (DCD lungs/EVLP) by defining inclusion/exclusion criteria and mapping a multidisciplinary workflow (donor selection, procurement/perfusion, documentation) that meets current consensus. Specify ≥ two process metrics to monitor implementation.
  • Detect early or rising complication signals from M&M case reviews, perform concise root-cause analysis, and outline corrective actions to prevent recurrence and improve outcomes.
  • Translate current evidence and consensus guidance into actionable plans to standardize care and improve outcomes.
