Speaker: Paige Chardavoyne, MD, MEd

Title: Evaluating Emergency Department-Based Peer Recovery Support Services for Patients Impacted by Substance Use

Introduction:  Dr. Chardavoyne is a consultation-liaison psychiatry fellow at Mayo Clinic. Her primary clinical interest is acute care psychiatry, with a particular focus on emergency psychiatry. She is passionate about improving care for patients presenting to the emergency department with psychiatric symptoms. She values opportunities to study this area through research and to serve as a clinician educator.

Learning Objectives
Upon completion of this activity, participants should be able to:

  • Summarize the current evidence related to emergency department-based peer recovery support services for patients impacted by substance use.

  • Identify factors which may influence the effectiveness of peer recovery support services in the emergency department for patients impacted by substance use.

  • Propose how future studies can be designed to better capture the experience of patients impacted by substance use working with peers in the emergency department.

Speaker: John Li, M.D., Ph.D.

Title: Condensed Transcranial Direct Current Stimulation for Hospitalized Patients with Treatment-Resistant Depression

Introduction: John Li, MD, PhD, is a PGY-4 psychiatry resident at Mayo Clinic, where he is completing residency training with emphasis in research and is expected to graduate in June. He completed a Ph.D. in Biophysics and a research fellowship in psychiatry and the Medical College of Wisconsin, focusing on using functional neuroimaging to investigate the neural correlates of emotion dysregulation and memory impairment in older patients with depression and dementia. He received an M.D. from the University of Wisconsin. During psychiatry residency, his research has centered on using transcranial direct current stimulation (tDCS) as a novel adjunctive intervention to improve clinical outcomes in adults hospitalized with treatment-resistant depression.

Learning Objectives:
Upon completion of this activity, participants should be able to:

  1. Identify transcranial direct current stimulation (tDCS) as a low-cost and portable neuromodulation intervention with potential utility for treating hospitalized patients with treatment-resistant depression.

  2. Describe the methodology of a condensed tDCS protocol, including electrode montage stimulation dosage duration, and frequency of treatment delivery.

  3. Summarize clinical outcomes of tDCS in hospitalized patients, with emphasis on treatment adherence, tolerability, and reduction in depressive symptom severity.
