Session date:
10/07/2026 - 12:00pm to 1:00pm

Speakers: Andrew Krystal, MD

Title: Personalized Closed-Loop Deep Brain Stimulation

Introductions: Dr. Krystal is the Ray and Dagmar Dolby Distinguished Professor and Vice Chair for Research in the Department of Psychiatry and Behavioral Sciences at UCSF where he is also Director of the Clinical and Translational Sleep Research Laboratory, the Dolby Family Center for Mood Disorders and the Interventional Psychiatry Program. The primary focus of his research is the development of biomarkers for mood disorders and sleep disorders and their application in developing novel personalized treatments for these conditions.

Learning Objectives:
Upon completion of this activity, participants should be able to:

  1. Describe the limitations of available therapies for major depressive disorder and the evidence indicating the need for personalization of treatment, both in general, and for deep brain stimulation (DBS)
  2. Review evidence indicating that it is possible to elicit a rapid (within minutes), statistically significant, antidepressant effect in individuals with treatment-resistant depression that is reproducible, requires personalization, and can be the basis of effective long-term antidepressant therapy.
  3. Review evidence that it is possible to identify a statistically significant intracranial EEG biomarker of depression severity within individuals that requires personalization and can be the basis of long-term effective treatment when implemented to trigger stimulation as part of closed-loop DBS
