The goal of a quality improvement project (QIP) is to increase effectiveness and efficiency of actions and procedures with the purpose of meeting the needs of patients and achieving additional benefits for the organization.  QIPs will provide individuals with a foundation of quality improvement training and will empower them to identify opportunities for improvement at individual, group or team, departmental, and institutional levels.  Prospective and retrospective QIPs that meet criteria and have had activity within the past 12 months may be submitted and reviewed by the QRB for the purpose of awarding educational credit (CME, MOC) and Mayo Quality Fellows program certification.

Learning Objectives

Learning Objectives - Upon conclusion of this activity, participants should be able to:

  • Define current practice gaps and set improvement goals relating to patient care and patient outcomes
  • Measure performance change utilizing relevant data sources
  • Analyze data including sample size, quality of data, current process and performance using quality tools such as run chars, control chars, PDSA, Lean and Six Sigma
  • Design, select and evaluate interventions to Improve performance
  • Identify the outcomes of the project including barriers, imitations, benefits, and short-and long-term changes what will support ongoing, sustained improvement (Control)
  • Reflect on the quality improvement project’s impact to personal performance
