Learning Objectives

Upon conclusion of this program, participants should be able to:

  • Describe how to identify and treat patients at increased risk of respiratory depression.
  • Discuss methods for preparing the complex patient for procedures in the outpatient setting.
  • Determine what implantable patient devices will interfere with the operating room and radiology equipment and how to manage them.
  • Discuss implementation of glycemic control programs used in the operating room and ICU.
  • Discuss the latest findings and studies regarding obesity in the pediatric patient.
  • Discuss the diagnosis and treatment of bridging the cardiac patient within the OR, ICU.
  • Assess and manage intraoperative hypotension and outcomes that result.
  • Discuss the process and development for home going nerve catheters.
  • Discuss the management of patients in the MRI suite and outside the OR.
  • Discuss the preparation and management of fetal surgery.
  • Discuss new advances in management of blood transfusion practices in 2018.
  • Discuss the value and cost effectiveness of an outfield endoscopy practice.
  • Discuss care of the OB patient with cardiac disease.
  • Discuss the basic mechanisms of ECMO and what patients may benefit from its use.
  • Discuss the care of patients on the drug Buprenorphine who are coming to surgery.

Shepler's Mackinac Island Ferry
Shepler's Ferry to Mackinac Island can be accessed by driving to Mackinaw City (on Michigan’s lower peninsula) or St. Ignace (upper peninsula). Get driving directions to Mackinaw City or St. Ignace. Registered attendees of the Anesthesiology Update course receive a travel discount by using Shepler’s Ferry and can purchase tickets online using the password "MAYO18" or identify yourself as a conference attendee at the ticket office. Rate is $19 for adults and $10 for children.

Mackinaw City – Overnight Parking

Premium On-Site Parking $25.00 / night: Our premium parking option allows you to park right at the dock parking lot. You will receive a parking ticket when you enter the lot and you will be required to pay as you exit for your return home. Before parking, come to our unloading area, where we will tag your bags for your hotel. Then you can find a spot in the lot adjacent our dock. Save time and buy your ferry tickets online and go right from your car to the boat, skipping the ticket office line completely.
Standard Off-Site Parking $5.00 / night: If you choose our standard overnight parking option, first come to the dock to unload bags and bikes. You will need to go to the ticket office to pay for your parking prior to heading to that lot. The lot is approximately four blocks away, with continuous tram service offered back from the lot. Our ticket office cast members will give you directions to the lot when you pick up your parking pass. Please plan to arrive one hour prior to your desired ferry departure time.

St. Ignace – Overnight Parking

Standard Parking $5.00 / night: All of our parking in St. Ignace is right at the dock. You will receive a parking ticket when you enter the dock area and you will be required to pay for the number of nights parked upon exiting for your departure home. (There will be no charge if you are just visiting for the day.)

Pellston Regional Airport (PLN):

Commercial Airlines:
Commercial air service to Pellston is available daily through Delta Airlink in Detroit.

Limousine and Shuttle Service:
Mackinaw Shuttle is available at the Pellston, Michigan Airport for taxi service between the Pellston Airport and the Mackinaw City ferry docks along with other Michigan cities on a 24-hour basis. This service is also available on a charter basis. Reservations are recommended.
