Everything We Could Do: The Importance of Bearing Witness in Medical Narratives

David McGlynn

PRESENTER BIO

David McGlynn is the author of the 2025 novel, Everything We Could Do. The product of more than a decade of research, the novel takes place in a NICU in a regional hospital in the Midwest.

 

His previous books include the memoirs, One Day You'll Thank Me: Lessons from an Unexpected Fatherhood, A Door in the Ocean, and the story collection The End of the Straight and Narrow. His writing appears in The New York Times, Washington Post, The American Scholar, Men's Health, Best American Sports Writing, and numerous literary journals. He's appeared on radio and TV programs around the country and his work has been reviewed on National Public Radio's Fresh Air.

 

Another novel, Liberal Arts, is forthcoming in 2026 and he's currently working on a nonfiction book, The Channel: The History, Science, and Insanity of the World'd Most Famous Swim. He lives in Madison, Wisconsin and teaches at Lawrence University.

  • Discuss the research required to write a creative work about healthcare in America. 
  • Examine the history of tragedy, as a sub-category of artistic and literary expression, and argue for why understanding tragedy is essential to medical narratives. 
  • Provide practical strategies for medical providers seeking to convert their experiences into works of narrative art.
