Foundations of Critical Care Nursing Online CNE Course: Cardiac Concepts

Cardiac output is necessary for the delivery of oxygen-rich blood to the tissues. Cardiac output is dependent upon heart rate, volume of blood in the ventricle at the onset of contraction, the resistance the heart must eject against, as well as the strength of the heart muscle contraction. This course introduces you to the concepts of preload, afterload, and contractility. You will learn how to assess and finesse these variables to improve perfusion in your patient.

Target Audience

This CNE course is designed for RNs, LPNs, and healthcare professionals providing care for progressive and critical care patients.

Learning Objectives

Upon completion of this activity, participants should be able to:

  • Describe physical assessment of perfusion
  • Define the meaning of preload, afterload, and contractility
  • Correlate heart rate and rhythm with physical assessment and treatment 
  • Discuss ischemia, injury, and infarction in relation to physical assessment and treatments 
  • Introduce heart failure concepts and patient impact
