This course has been developed to increase provider knowledge regarding genetic testing and diseases with a genetic basis. It will be subdivided into sections: Inheriting Genetic Conditions, Sporadic vs Hereditary Cancers, Interpreting Results & Management Decisions, and Direct to Consumer Testing.

Target Audience

The primary audience for this module is Mayo Clinic providers (primary care physicians). Allied Health, Nurses, Physician Assistants, and Resident Fellows.

  • Identify the difference between a chromosomal, mendelian and multifactorial disorders
  • Define what a variant is
  • Identify the differences between variant classifications
  • Identify two indicators that warrant a genetic referral
  • Identify the most appropriate family member to receive genetic testing
  • Define a multi-factorial condition
  • State the different types of possible test results
  • Explain the potential limitations of a non-diagnostic test result
