Upon completion of this activity, participants should be able to:

• Review historical and contemporary examples in which advances in medical, endoscopic, and minimally invasive therapies have altered or replaced established surgical procedures.
• Interpret published evidence and procedural utilization trends associated with changing treatment paradigms in selected surgical diseases.
• Analyze the impact of therapeutic innovation on surgical indications, procedural volume, training, and maintenance of technical expertise.
• Evaluate strategies by which surgeons and surgical disciplines can adapt to evolving treatment paradigms while maintaining clinical relevance and value in multidisciplinary patient care.
