Session date:
10/12/2026 - 7:00am to 8:00am

LEARNING OBJECTIVES
Upon completion of this activity, participants should be able to:

  1. Evaluate how rigid BMI cutoffs (e.g., <40 kg/m²) affect access to care and may propagate racial, ethnic, gender, and socioeconomic disparities among vulnerable populations.
  2. Summarize the evidence on the effectiveness of preoperative weight-loss requests,
  3. Assess whether preoperative weight loss (surgical or nonsurgical) reliably reduces surgical risk and describe the role of emerging medical weight-loss strategies including GLP-1 receptor agonists.
  4. Apply evidence-based comorbidity preoperative and intraoperative optimization strategies for obese patients to conduct TJA safely.
  5. Incorporate a multidisciplinary, patient-centered approach using shared decision-making and informed consent rather than strict BMI thresholds.
