Title: Food and Nutrition Security, Diet Quality, and Healthy Eating Tips for Mental Health Professionals and Their Clients

Introduction:

Michael T. Compton, MD, MPH is Professor of Psychiatry at the Columbia University College of Physicians & Surgeons. After medical school at University of Virginia, he trained in psychiatry, prevention, public health, and community psychiatry, all at Emory in Atlanta. He served on faculty at Emory from 2003 to 2010. He was then Professor and Director of Research Initiatives in Psychiatry at The George Washington University School of Medicine, and then Chairman of Psychiatry at Lenox Hill Hospital in Manhattan until 2016 when he joined Columbia. Dr. Compton is a Distinguished Fellow of the American Psychiatric Association; he is also board-certified in both preventive medicine and lifestyle medicine. Much of his research pertains to criminal justice over-involvement among persons with mental illnesses, but he is also very interested in the social determinants of mental health, especially food and nutrition insecurity, which partly stems from his interest in vegetables, farming, and healthy eating.
