There is substantial evidence on the role that diet and nutrition, physical activity and exercise, and resiliency plays in preventing and treating chronic diseases and improving quality of life. Traditional CME courses use a classroom-based format to educate healthcare professionals in these areas. However, it is challenging for people to make beneficial lifestyle behavior changes, and education by itself doesn’t necessarily promote behavior change. This course is experiential as well as educational. It is based on the Mayo Clinic Healthy Living Program, a program designed to help people make beneficial lifestyle behavior changes. In this course, attendees learn about lifestyle medicine, and actively participate in classes designed to help create an individualized wellness plan. Learning in this personal manner helps participants counsel patients on making these same healthy behavior changes.

This comprehensive course is the first gastroenterology, hepatology and gastrointestinal surgery course held in Spanish in Latin America by two leading healthcare institutions. The multidisciplinary curriculum reflects the Mayo Clinic model of care across various specialties, as well as expertise from speakers of the Instituto Nacional de Ciencias Médicas y Nutrición Salvador Zubirán. This course is being offered to increase the number of women faculty and staff members who initiate scholarly activity and achieve academic appointments (instructor, assistant professor, associate professor and professor). For various reasons, female faculty members achieve associate and professor rank at a rate lower than their male counterparts. This is true both within and outside Mayo. Additionally, many faculty and staff are encouraged to engage in scholarly activity yet have less experience. This course proposes to raise awareness of the steps needed for women to advance their scholarly and academic careers.
