This Trauma and Acute Care Surgery Symposium Online CME Course is an evolving specialty in the field of surgery that has taken the principals of trauma care (organized teams, evidence-based processes and procedures, and continuous quality improvement) and applied them to patients with other urgent, time-sensitive surgical conditions. Acute care surgery involves three central components-trauma, critical care and emergency surgery. Episodes specifically address the presentation, diagnosis and management of common prostate problems, such as benign prostatic hyperplasia (BPH), prostate cancer screening, prostate cancer treatment, prostate cancer and sexual health, updates in advanced prostate cancer, and primary care management of the post-prostate cancer patient.

What's New in Family Medicine Online 2021 is the 2nd in a series of courses that focuses on a myriad of topics that are important to the broad specialty of family medicine. It will provide learners with current and relevant updates for daily management of various patient health concerns encountered commonly in primary care. There are some brief topics involving the COVID19 pandemic including navigating telehealth which has become commonplace in many practices. Topics include the following: abnormal uterine bleeding in post-menopausal women; medication assisted treatment (MAT) for opioid use disorder; irritable bowel syndrome; chronic kidney disease and use of diuretics; acute care/virtual visits; hyperlipidemia/lipid management; transgender care including topics on lactation and overall care of this population; non-alcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD); women’s health/sexual dysfunction; COVID19 and athlete return to sports; anticoagulation and hypertension.

Video capsule endoscopy (VCE) is currently considered the gold standard in the investigation of small bowel disease and is widely available in clinical practice as a noninvasive modality to examine the small bowel. This course provides a structured VCE training curriculum with a validated assessment tool for gastroenterologists and trainees and includes four hours of didactic tutoring, hardware and software instruction, and review of cases with VCE experts. Participants are then expected to complete 25 VCE interpretations. A formalized and validated assessment tool was developed and referred to as the capsule competency test (CapCT). This test evaluates the fundamentals of knowledge for the procedure including indications and contraindications, and the ability to accurately identify, interpret, and document VCE findings. Participants are required to complete the CapCT as part of their training.

Splinting is a critical intervention to optimize upper extremity function for people after a variety of neurological events. In patients with hypertonicity, splinting provides prolonged stretch to reduce risk of tendon/muscle shortening and to inhibit tonal influences. For patients with cervical level spinal cord injury, splint positioning may impact tenodesis grasp patterns. This four-part series addresses upper extremity anatomy, assessment of neurological deficits, and splinting techniques of the upper extremity for patients with acquired brain injury, traumatic brain injury and spinal cord injury.
