Connecting with Patients for Tobacco Free Living is a three module, 3.5 hours, online learning experience using video, case-based learning, and interactive responses that prepares healthcare providers to motivate, treat, and support patients in becoming tobacco free. Tobacco use disorder is one of the leading causes of preventable death worldwide. Treatment consists of counseling for behavior change and pharmacotherapy. However, despite the availability of effective treatments, most patients do not receive treatment for tobacco use disorder due to provider difficulties in engaging and counseling patients as well as misperceptions about the safety and utilization of pharmacotherapy. This course provides participants with the skills and understanding to better engage patients, and the knowledge to deliver effective, evidence-based treatment and support.

This online CME course is recommended for primary care providers. The course is comprised of Mayo Clinic Talks podcast interviews about the background, medical management, and principles of treatment of child and adolescent eating disorders, including myths, identification and assessment, treatment options, and considerations of working with patients and coaching parents/families. There is substantial evidence on the role that diet and nutrition, physical activity and exercise, and resiliency plays in preventing and treating chronic diseases and improving quality of life. Traditional CME courses use a classroom-based format to educate healthcare professionals in these areas. However, it is challenging for people to make beneficial lifestyle behavior changes, and education by itself doesn’t necessarily promote behavior change. This course is experiential as well as educational. It is based on the Mayo Clinic Healthy Living Program, a program designed to help people make beneficial lifestyle behavior changes. In this course, attendees learn about lifestyle medicine, and actively participate in classes designed to help create an individualized wellness plan. Learning in this personal manner helps participants counsel patients on making these same healthy behavior changes
