DESCRIPTION
This series consists of 2 conferences:
Hematopathology Case Sharing Conference meets bi-weekly Mondays, 11 a.m. - 12 p.m. (Noon) in Hilton 1133.
The Hematopathology Case Sharing Conference is a conference where trainees and consultants present a broad spectrum of hematopathology cases to disseminate experience, discussion and project germination. Cases may include peripheral blood, bone marrow, lymph node/tissue, flow cytometry, molecular genetics, cytogenetics, coagulation and mass spectrometry. Cases are presented as glass slides with the multi-headed microscope or images with salient points discussed. Brief scholarly review of supportive or important key articles is also presented when appropriate to provide literature references for further self-study and continuing education, although this component does not constitute a formal "journal club".
Metabolic Hematology Laboratory Interesting Case Conference meets the first and third Wednesdays at 12 p.m. (Noon)
The Metabolic Hematology Laboratory Interesting Case Conference discusses clinical and laboratory features found in a wide range of cases with an emphasis on hereditary hematology. This is most commonly a case-based conference that reflects topics encountered in the laboratory, although rarely conferences organized around a single focused topic may occur. Hemoglobin disorders, common and rare thalassemias, RBC enzyme, RBC membrane, methemoglobinemia, sulfhemoglobinemia and hereditary erythrocytosis cases are discussed. We encounter many common and rare entities from diverse ethnicities and employ a wide variety of diagnostic tools for characterization of these disorders including peripheral blood and bone marrow morphology, enzyme activity, electrophoresis, HPLC, mass spectrometry, osmotic fragility, EMA binding, Sanger sequencing and NGS panel testing. Cases can be discussed by any participant and are commonly led by technologists, consultants, residents/fellows and genetic counselors.
TARGET AUDIENCE
The target audience includes M.D. (hematopathologists), Ph.D. (cytogeneticists), pathology residents/fellows, allied health staff (physician extenders, genetic counselors, technologists)
LEARNING OBJECTIVES
1) Identify and interpret histopathologic, phenotypic, cytogenetic, laboratory and/or molecular features for subclassification of various neoplastic and non-neoplastic hematopoietic conditions.
2) Select and apply ancillary testing modalities in the diagnosis, prognostication and treatment of neoplastic and non-neoplastic hematopoietic conditions.
3) Correlate specialized testing results into a final integrated report, as appropriate.
