COURSE DESCRIPTION
Inflammatory bowel disease (IBD), which includes ulcerative colitis and Crohn’s disease, affects an estimated 3 million adults in the United States and is increasing in incidence and prevalence. In order to improve patient outcomes, pharmacist involvement in providing care to patients with IBD is essential. Pharmacists may be involved in using shared decision making to select and educate patients on the use of available conventional and biologic agents and applying strategies to optimize medical treatment. Therefore, continuing education is vital to help pharmacists become well-informed on the latest evidence-based management approaches. This presentation will review the current IBD guidelines, biologic agents, and combination therapies and will address other identified educational gaps including preventive health and IBD in pregnancy.
At the conclusion of this knowledge-based CE session, participants should be able to:
- Describe factors contributing to the selection of medical therapy and health maintenance in Inflammatory Bowel Disease (IBD)
- Recall resources available to guide clinical decision making regarding medical treatment of IBD
- Identify various roles of pharmacists in the care of patients with IBD
