COURSE DESCRIPTION

Treatment of gastrointestinal stromal tumors (GISTs) has incorporated targeted therapies since the initial approval of imatinib mesylate in 2002 for advanced or metastatic disease. Newly approved medications, including ripretinib and avapritinib, inhibit the oncogenic signaling of KIT and PDGFRA receptor tyrosine kinases differently to allow for treatment of imatinib-resistant disease. After reviewing the pathophysiology of GIST and its unique mutational landscape, the speaker will discuss the pharmacology and utilization of current therapies.

LEARNING OBJECTIVES
At the conclusion of this knowledge-based CE session, participants should be able to:

  • Review pathophysiology of gastrointestinal stromal tumors
  • Describe the pharmacology of medications used to treat gastrointestinal stromal tumors
  • Discuss the place in therapy of new treatment options, including ripretinib and avapritinib
