DESCRIPTION:
The Mayo Clinic Audiology externs each presented on work they have done this year. Four of the five topics are focused on vestibular assessment and findings in migraine, superior canal dehiscence, and chronic dizzy patients. The fifth presentation centers on audiological care in the pediatric intensive care unit.

LEARNING OBJECTIVES
Upon conclusion of this activity, participants should be able to: 

  • Give examples of at least two expected vestibular findings in the migraine population.
  • Recognize the common patient outcomes in those with chronic dizziness.
  • Describe the role of audiology in the PICU setting.

PRESENTER BIOS

Elena Hoogland, B.S., is an extern at Mayo Clinic, Arizona. She is originally from Florida and completed both her undergraduate and graduate studies at the University of Florida. Her primary areas of interest are cochlear implants, bone-anchored implants, and hearing aids.

Renee Landon-Lane, B.A. is currently a Fourth Year Extern at Mayo Clinic, Arizona. She is originally from New Zealand and immigrated to the US in 2002. Renee completed her undergraduate degree in Communication Disorders at California State University, Fullerton, and is completing her graduate degree at Vanderbilt University. Her areas of interest include vestibular science and hearing aids.

Amy Sarow, M.A., is a current 4th year Audiology Extern at Mayo Clinic in Jacksonville, Florida. She will graduate in May 2021 with her AuD from the University of Iowa. Ms. Sarow earned her Bachelor of Science from Central Michigan University.

Manami Shah, M.S., will receive an Au.D from the University of Nebraska-Lincoln in May, 2021 and received a Master’s degree in Audiology from the University of Nebraska – Lincoln in 2019. She is currently a fourth-year doctoral extern at Mayo Clinic in Rochester, MN and will soon be a part of the Audiology team at Vanderbilt University Medical Center. Shah’s major clinical interests include Vestibular Audiology, Cochlear Implants, Electrophysiology, Hearing Aids, Osseo-Integrated Devices and Humanitarian Audiology.

Alexandra Watts, M.A., will receive an Au.D. from the University of Iowa in May, 2021 and received a master’s degree in Audiology from the University of Iowa in 2019. She is currently a fourth year doctoral extern at Mayo Clinic in Rochester, MN. Watt’s major clinical interests include pediatrics and cochlear implants.

Biography

Heather Clark, Ph.D. 

Dr. Clark is the Chair of Speech Pathology in the Department of Neurology and Associate Professor in the College of Medicine at the Mayo Clinic in Rochester, Minnesota. She is board-certified by the Academy of Neurologic Communication Disorders and Sciences and is a Fellow of the American Speech-Language-Hearing Association. Her clinical responsibilities include differential diagnosis of communication and swallowing disorders in adults and children. She serves as co-investigator in several projects examining the nature of speech, language, and swallowing impairment in degenerative neurologic disease.  Dr. Clark has served as a topic chair for the ASHA convention, program chair of the Conference on Motor Speech, and chair of the fall conference of the North Carolina Speech Language Hearing Association.

Jill Gruenwald, Au.D.

Jill Gruenwald, Au.D., is the Audiology Supervisor at Mayo Clinic. Her current areas of clinical practice are adult diagnostics and cochlear implants with past experience providing hearing aid services and completing vestibular evaluations. She is a Fellow of the American Speech-Language-Hearing Association.

Gayla Poling, Ph.D.

Gayla L. Poling, PhD, is Director of Diagnostic Audiology at Mayo Clinic – Rochester, MN and Vice-Chair of Research in the Department of Otolaryngology.  She received her undergraduate and master’s training in Speech and Hearing Science from The Ohio State University and completed her Clinical Fellowship at Henry Ford Hospital. She practiced as a clinical audiologist at Mayo Clinic prior to returning to Ohio State where she earned a PhD in Hearing Science. She completed postdoctoral training focused on translational research at the Medical University of South Carolina and Northwestern University. Her current research interest is on developing diagnostic tools focused on the early detection and prevention of hearing loss due to aging, noise and other environmental factors (ototoxicity).
