September 21, 2023 - Internet Live Activity - Scottsdale, Arizona

This 4-hour workshop will use the American Board of Family Medicine Pain Care knowledge self-assessment(KSA) module to review 60 paun care topics in a quiz/answer/discussion format. Participants that are certified by the American Board of Family Medicine will receive credit for completion of the ABFM KSA. The KSA will be completed by group participation and discussion to allow for learning from each other. Additionally, a content expert will provide clarification and additional content. The workshop is not restricted to physicians certified by The American Board of Family Medicine only. Clinicians certified by other organizations will benefit from the same learning opportunities.

Target Audience

This topic is important and has become a more visible public health issue. All fields within medicine that provide direct patient care are impacted, including medical, surgical and outpatient settings. All providers who prescribe (MD, DO, NP, PA, CNS) or administer (nurse, pharmacist, etc.) opioids to patients would benefit from attending this course. This course is particularly relevant for primary care providers that maintain and monitor patients on chronic opioid therapy.

Learning Objectives

Upon completion of this activity, participants should be able to:

    • Explain how to apply best practice for non-opioid adjuvants, interventional pain therapies, and alternative pain modalities as part of a comprehensive multimodal pain management plan.
    • Identify the challenges involved in chronic opioid management: balancing patient safety, patient’s quality of life, and provider satisfaction.

Attendance at any Mayo Clinic course does not indicate or guarantee competence or proficiency in the skills, knowledge or performance of any care or procedure(s) which may be discussed or taught in this course.
