Critical Care Workshop: Point of Care Ultrasound - Live (in-person) Feb 15 - 12:30 pm

This introductory workshop is designed for clinicians interested in exploring the use of point-of-care ultrasound to improve diagnostic assessment skills. Participants will have the opportunity to perform focused cardiac, lung and vessel ultrasounds, as well as review of the Focused Assessment and Sonography in Trauma (FAST) exam. Ultrasound examinations will be performed on live models with bedside instruction. This workshop has been designed to introduce clinicians to the concept of ultrasound guided assessment of the hospitalized patient.
Target Audience
This course is designed for hospitalists, nurse practitioners, physician assistants, advance practice nurses, registered nurses, allied health professionals, physicians and residents.
Learning Objectives
Upon completion of this session, participants should be able to:
- Visualize the heart in at least two different windows and assess global contractility (normal, hyperdynamic, reduced).
- Visualize the inferior vena cava and estimate central venous pressure based on measurement of the diameter and collapsibility.
- Identify thorax and lung anatomy by ultrasound.
- Recognize differences in ultrasound probes, and review proper probe selection.
- Review concepts of vascular ultrasound was assessing for deep vein thrombosis (DVT).
- Perform the Focused Assessment and Sonography in Trauma (FAST) exam on a live model.
