Transitioning patients from outpatient mental health to primary care: Exploring practices, barriers and facilitators

Annie Waniger, MD

Introduction

Dr. Annie Waniger, MD is a 4th year psychiatry resident at the Mayo Clinic. She is originally from La Crosse, WI and completed medical school in Milwaukee at the Medical College of Wisconsin. She entered residency with a strong interest in community psychiatry and was chosen as an inaugural member of the Community Psychiatry Track in Eau Claire, WI. She completed her 3rd year of residency training in Eau Claire. She also received the Bob Baumer, MD, Community Psychiatry Scholarship from the Minnesota Psychiatric Society for her dedication to community psychiatry. Her other areas of interest include geriatric psychiatry and medical education. She is staying at Mayo after her residency, to pursue a geriatric psychiatry fellowship.

LEARNING OBJECTIVES

Upon conclusion of this activity, participants should be able to:

  • Recognize existing practices and implementation strategies that support the transition of patients with stable mental health conditions to primary care.
  • Identify barriers and facilitators to transitioning patients from outpatient mental health services to primary care.
  • Describe opportunities for future research and application.

Speaker #2:

Psychedelics; a look at current research and potential therapeutic uses

Ammar Almorsy, MBBCh

Introduction

Dr. Almorsy went to medical school in Egypt. After graduation he served as an officer in the Egyptian army and practiced in both emergency medicine and psychiatry. He spent a year at a large residential addiction treatment facility before moving to the United States for clinical rotations and research. He worked as a post-doctoral researcher in the Mayo Clinic departments of Psychiatry & Psychology and Behavioral Neurology prior to starting his residency in 2020. Dr. Almorsy's research interests include neuromodulation, substance use research, and impact of social media use on mental health and well-being. After graduation he will start an Addiction Treatment Fellowship at the Mayo Clinic.

Upon conclusion of this activity, participants should be able to:

  • Describe three mechanisms of action for the psychiatric effects of psychedelic medications.
  • Identify two potential clinical uses of psychedelics, including one that is close to FDA approval.
