Teaching Ethics at the Intersections: Narrative Medicine, Person-Centered Care & Evidence-base Medicine

Jennifer Hartmark-Hill, M.D.

PRESENTER BIO

Dr. Jen Hartmark-Hill is a Mayo Clinic-trained Family Medicine physician who currently serves as the Director of the Narrative Medicine and Health Humanities Program and holds dual appointments as a Professor in the Department of Bioethics & Medical Humanism and the Department of Family, Community & Preventive Medicine at the University of Arizona College of Medicine-Phoenix. She directs a four-year Certificate of Distinction in Health Humanities for medical students and is passionate about integrating the humanities alongside medical sciences in the curriculum in order to foster trainee growth to become more compassionate and humanistic physicians. Dr. Hartmark-Hill is originally from northern Minnesota but has for many years called the Valley home, where she enjoys gardening and hiking with her husband and two cocker spaniels during the cooler months.

LEARNING OBJECTIVES

  • Describe how narrative-informed approaches contribute to the practice of evidence-based medicine and person-centered care. 

  • Analyze practical approaches for teaching and integrating narrative ethics for clinicians and medical educators.
