Speaker: Liliana Patarroyo Rodriguez, MD, MS

Title: Ketamine and Esketamine in Treatment-Resistant Depression with Cardiovascular Comorbidity: Examining the Evidence Gap

Introduction: Dr. Liliana Patarroyo-Rodriguez was born and raised in Ibagué, Colombia, where she earned her medical degree from Universidad del Tolima and completed her psychiatry residency at Unisanitas. She then worked as a consultation-liaison psychiatrist at Fundación Santa Fe de Bogotá, during which time she completed a master's in epidemiology, pursued clinical research, and served as an associate professor at Universidad de los Andes Medical School. Motivated to further her psychiatric training, Dr. Patarroyo-Rodriguez joined the Mayo Clinic's general psychiatry residency program, where she served as Chief Resident and contributed to the research track, including projects within the Ketamine Clinic and catatonia research. She is currently completing her Consultation-Liaison Psychiatry Fellowship at Mayo Clinic, after which she will be joining Mayo Clinic Florida. 

 

Learning Objectives: 
Upon completion of this activity, participants should be able to:

  • Explain why cardiovascular monitoring matters in TRD treatment, including the prevalence and prognostic impact of CVD in individuals with depression.

  • Apply a risk-benefit framework when considering ketamine/esketamine to patients with TRD and cardiovascular disease.

  • Describe the cardiovascular safety profile of ketamine/esketamine based on the current evidence and real-world data from the TRACK Study. 

 

Speaker: Nataliia Orlova, MD

Title: Pain, Substance and Creativity: What the Lives of Artists Reach Us About Mental Illness and Addiction  

Introduction:  

Dr. Nataliia Orlova is an addiction pshiatry fellow at Mayo Clinic specializing in the assessment and treatment of mental health and substance use disorders. Her clinical and academic interests include mental health, addiction, psychiatry, and the psychological aspects of chronic illness. Today she will be presenting on her scholarship project “Pain, Substances, and Creativity: What the Lives of Artists Teach Us About Mental Illness and Addiction” focusing on the relationship between artistic creativity, mental illness, and substance use.  

Learning Objectives: 
Upon completion of this activity, participants should be able to:

  1. Distinguish myth vs. Evidence regarding drugs and creativity. 

  2. Identify substance use as maladaptive coping. 

  3. Recognize common psychiatric syndromes reflected in artistic production.
