Session date:
09/09/2026 - 12:00pm to 1:00pm

Speaker: Hugo Botha, M.D., Ch.B

Title: From Neural Circuits to Neural Networks: AI for Recognizing Neurological (and Psychiatric) Conditions

Introduction: Dr. Botha is a consultant in behavioral neurology and assistant professor of neurology at Mayo Clinic in Rochester, Minnesota. He directs the Office of Digital Innovation within the Mayo Clinic Center for Clinical and Translational Science and is the co - PI of the Speech Innovation Group in Neurology, Artificial Intelligence and Linguistics (SIGNAL) lab. His NIH-funded research focuses on Alzheimer's disease and related dementias, with an emphasis on using machine learning and artificial intelligence to detect and monitor neurological conditions through speech and language.

Learning Objectives
Upon completion of this activity, participants should be able to:

  1. Evaluate the promise and limitations of AI for recognizing neurological and psychiatric conditions from speech and language, including the capabilities of pretrained models and key risks related to privacy, bias, and clinical interpretation.

  2. Demonstrate how modeling specific speech, language, and behavioral features with AI can support detection and monitoring of neurological conditions.
