PRESENTER BIO

Dr Mark Sheehan is Professor of Bioethics at the Ethox Centre, Nuffield Department of Population Health, University of Oxford, and Ethics Fellow of the Oxford NIHR Biomedical Research Centre. His work focuses on ethical and governance challenges across biomedical research, health technology assessment, and public health policy. His research spans research ethics, data governance, healthcare resource allocation, patient and public involvement, and empirical bioethics. He has held senior advisory roles including membership of NICE's Highly Specialised Technology Appraisal Committee and the Health Research Authority's National Research Ethics Advisors Panel. His work has informed policy on research ethics review, trusted data environments, patient experience in HTA, and fairness in NHS commissioning. He publishes widely and advises regulators, research institutions, and health system bodies.

LEARNING OBJECTIVES

• To understand and distinguish the role and nature of various kinds of approaches to electronic consent in large scale clinical trials.
• To analyse and reflect on the ethical importance of human interaction in conventional and digital or electronic consent.
• To reflect on the ethics of consent in the context of future developments in Al-enabled consent processes.
