Speakers: Samar Habl, M.D. and Cathleen M. Morey, Ph.D., LICSW

Title: Psychodynamic Approach to Systems Enactment: Restoring Mentalizing in Psychiatric Systems

Introductions: Samar Habl MD is the Associate Medical Director and Director of Admissions at the Austen Riggs Center. She is a certified board psychiatrist and a psychoanalyst. She graduated medical school from the American University of Beirut. She then trained in psychiatry at the Mayo clinic and pursued a four year fellowship in Psychoanalytic Psychotherapy at the Austen Riggs Center. She has since gotten certified as a psychoanalyst by the American Board of Psychoanalysis. She is a Group Relations Consultant, certified by the A K Rice institute and has particular interest and experience in the study of groups and social systems as it pertains to organizational life and the application of group relation theories to leadership development. She has directed three residential Group Relations Conferences sponsored by the Center for the Study of Groups and Social Systems (CSGSS), and another conference for psychoanalysts sponsored by the West Coast center GREX. She worked as a leadership consultant and executive coach at the International Management and Development school IMD in Switzerland, Copenhagen Business School, Denmark and Mawhiba foundation in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia.

Cathleen M. Morey, PhD, LICSW, is Director of Clinical Social Work and Social Work Training at the Austen Riggs Center, where she oversees clinical social work services and training, in addition to providing individual and family treatment for adults with complex psychiatric conditions. She is also an adjunct associate professor at the Smith College School for Social Work, teaching in the doctoral and clinical supervision certificate programs. With more than 25 years of clinical, research, and leadership experience, Dr. Morey’s scholarship and teaching focus on anti-oppressive ethics, system enactments, psychodynamic systems approaches, interdisciplinary teamwork, family therapy, and clinical social work education. She has published and presented nationally and internationally and serves as a peer reviewer for the Clinical Social Work Journal and Journal of Social Work Practice. Her international volunteer work with International Social Work Solutions includes research and trauma training in Uganda, Ghana, and the Democratic Republic of Congo. She also maintains a private practice specializing in psychotherapy, supervision, and ethics consultation.

3. Interpret two ways to make enactment-informed interventions.
